Read the Common Core standards
Pick up the newspaper or check out social media and you're going to find plenty of opinions about the Common Core. Decide for yourself what you think by reading the standards themselves.
There is a lot of debate and controversy about the Common Core State standards. The arguments tend to focus on things like how the standards are being implemented, the testing, and the role that corporations, foundations and the federal government have played in supporting and promoting the standards.
There is comparatively little debate about the actual content of the standards.
There are questions about whether the math students are required to master is more or less than students actually need to be ready for life after high school, for example. And there are concerns that students will read less literature in school because more nonfiction reading is called for in the standards.
But in general the standards themselves are widely supported by teachers, academics and other experts, according to opinion surveys and statements by a wide variety of professional organizations and educators.
